Outside Run is Done
A very kind and helpful lady from Fieldview Cavy Rescue (Here is an article about her work Fieldview Article) came on Saturday to give Billy an MOT.
She checked him all over and found he was very friendly, beautifully socialised and very healthy, though he had parasites (very common this time of year) so treated him with Ivermectin (which will last 3 months), and his lower front teeth are rather long (he's been eating grass, pellets and hay so it's probably genetic that they grow fast apparently) which needs a trip to the vet. He's a good weight but when his teeth are dealt with, he ought to put on a little more weight which will be good for him.
She answered all sorts of probably very simple questions about Billy and his food and his needs. I now feel more confident!
She also brought a bigger Hutch for me to borrow for overnight/ bad weather until his inside Cage arrives in a week or so, and I'm very glad she did, as I'm struggling today and it's raining - the borrowed Hutch is close to the patio doors.
After sweeping it out and relocating two spiders onto nearby plants - I lined the Hutch with newspaper, put a plastic litter tray filled with half an inch of Bio-Catolet paper litter and lots of hay all shaken out in the hiding side, and a thin layer of litter on the mesh side. I set up a water bowl and a water bottle near the mesh, and a bowl of pellets in the back corner. And put in a Boredom Busters Cardboard Chew Tunnel and some apple twigs.
After a rest, I put Billy inside. He took to it immediately, and surprised me by using the water bottle! He has ignored the one in his outside run. After about half an hour he started running inside the Tunnel from the hay to the pellets and back.
I am not giving him vegetables for 3 days, just hay and pellets and the lawn, because I thought I saw his wee was a little cloudy and white. This could mean he has a calcium buildup, so just in case, the rescue lady advised no veggies to 'purge' his system. It doesn't hurt him, but it does help prevent problems in the future. I did give him a couple of dandelion leaves last night that were growing on the patio - he is very good weed control! He likes Dandelions.
After all that activity over the last few days, I was shattered! So I went to bed early.
And yes, of course, I gave her a donation towards the Rescue. I know that many many charities are struggling because of the lockdown, and as she was kind enough to come to check him out, it was only fair!
